This is a list of Visas necessary for the tours within the Unique & Inspired section.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. The visa requirements for your trip vary depending on where you are from and where you are going. As a general rule most countries expect that you will have at least 6 months’ validity on your passport. On arrival visitors may be asked to present return tickets and evidence of means to cover your intended stay.

We keep the following information up to date as much as possible, but rules do change – it’s important that you check for yourself. Residents from other countries must consult the relevant embassies for up to date information.



Afghanistan - Visas

Getting visas for Afghanistan is becoming easier. Visas are being issued at most consulates and embassies, and cost around US$50 for 30 days for a tourist visa to US$150 for a work visa and US passport holders. Visas can easily be extended. You may need a letter of introduction. Rules and rates for differ depending on the embassy you use.

Bangladesh - Visas

Visas are available on arrival for some nationalities for approximately US$50. Validity: Single-entry: 6 months from date of issue for stays of up to 90 days. Stays are for a maximum of 90 days each stay.

Benin - Visas

Please obtain your Benin visa in advance. Australians & New Zealanders will need to apply through the Embassy in London. It may also be possible for most nationalities to obtain a visa for Benin in Accra, Ghana. An express visa in Accra takes 1-3 working days but may be subject to additional fees.

Borneo - Visas

Chad - Visas

Everyone needs a visa except passport holders from Benin, Burkina-Faso, Cameroon, Republic of Central Africa, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Niger.

To apply for a visa you will need;
3 application forms, 3 photographs, a US$150.00 fee.  The visa issued is valid for one month.

China - Visas

Mainland China and Hong Kong:
Most nationalities require a visa for mainland China. You must obtain your Chinese visa in advance. It is not possible to get a visa on arrival and Chinese visas can be difficult to obtain outside your country of residence. You may be able to apply for your visa in Hong Kong If you have time here before your trip departs. You will need a Single Entry Tourist for your trip valid for 30 days. Hong Kong is not considered part of mainland China for immigration purposes and most nationalities do not require a visa. Please check with an embassy for specific requirements. Please make sure if you have a transit anywhere in China before arriving at your destination that you check with your Airline to see if the transit will use your Chinese Visa. You need to make sure your China visa will cover you for any transits made.
Note: You will need to list the destinations you will visit in China in chronological order on your application form. Do not mention Kashgar, Turpan or Tibet anywhere on your application form. While these areas are not off limits to travellers, they are considered politically sensitive, so including these on your visa application could lead to significant delays or your visa being denied.

Ethiopia - Visas

Most nationalities require a visa for entry to Ethiopia. If you are flying into Addis Ababa you can obtain a visa on arrival. You’ll need two passport photos and approximately US$40. You may be asked for proof of a return ticket – please carry your tour notes as proof that you are leaving overland. If you are entering at any border other than Addis Ababa airport you MUST obtain your visa in advance.

Ghana - Visas

Australia: Yes – in advance / Belgium: Yes – in advance / Canada: Yes – in advance / Germany: Yes – in advance / Ireland: Yes – in advance / Netherlands: Yes – in advance / New Zealand: Yes – in advance / South Africa: Yes – in advance / Switzerland: Yes – in advance / United Kingdom: Yes – in advance / USA: Yes – in advance.

For most nationalities a visa is required and needs to be obtained in advance. If you are entering Ghana on an overland trip please contact your local embassy to do this as it’s no longer possible to obtain these visas en route.

Guyana - Visas

Australia: Not required / Belgium: Not required / Canada: Not required / Germany: Not required Ireland: Not required / Netherlands: Not required / New Zealand: Not required / South Africa: Not required / Switzerland: Not required / United Kingdom: Not required

Haiti - Visas

A tourist visa is not required for stays up to 90 days. Only citizens from the following countries are required to apply for a tourist visa: Colombia, Dominican Republic and Panama. If they have a valid Canadian, Schengen or US visa then no visa is required for Haiti. The fee for a tourist visa is US$25.

Indonesia - Visas

Visas on arrival are valid for 30 days, cost approximately US$25 and are available upon arrival by air in Bali, Jakarta, Medan and a few other international airports, or by ship at a limited number of Indonesian sea ports.No extension of these visas can be made, they will be issued to arriving passengers at a counter set up prior to immigration processing. Payment for the visa can be made in all major currencies or by VISA / MasterCard.

Nationals of all countries planning to stay for more than 30 days in Indonesia have to apply for the appropriate visa at an overseas Indonesian consulate or embassy before their departure.

Kyrgyzstan - Visas

Many nationalities no longer require a visa to travel to Kyrgyzstan for up to 60 days, including Australia, Belgium, UK, Germany, Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, USA and Switzerland. Other nationalities should check with their nearest embassy. Nationals of other countries not listed should check their requirements at their nearest embassy.

Madagascar - Visas

All nationalities require a visa for Madagascar. 30 day tourist Visas are available for most nationalities on arrival at Antananarivo airport. Currently the visa fee has been suspended. Visa and other entry and exit conditions change regularly so we recommend that you contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Madagascar for the most up to date information.

Moldova - Visas

Most nationalities will need a visas. Original invitation from the Migration Service of the Moldova Ministry of Internal Affairs will be necessary, although not required for NZ or Australian nationals. You will need a cover letter outlining the purpose of the visit, intended accommodation etc, proof of tour confirmation or land bookings and proof of funds.

North Korea - Visas

Everyone needs a visa, and you need to book a tour. North Korea is such a special country that only a few tourists get to visit each year. The visa costs approximately USD$70. Israeli, South Korean and US citizens have to visit with special tours and make special arrangements.

Papua New Guinea - Visas

All visitors to Papua New Guinea are required to have a visa to enter and all nationalities must apply for their visa prior to travelling to PNG. Currently a 30-day tourist visa is available for nationals of many countries including Australia, Japan, New Zealand, UK, USA and most western European countries. This tourist visa is non-extendable and is issued free of charge.

Please note that visa processing times can be subject to delays, particularly during peak periods, so we commend you allow sufficient time when applying for your visa.

Romania - Visas

A Visa is not required for 90 days in any 6 month period for New Zealand passport holders.

Russia - Visas

Most nationalities require a visa for Russia. You will need a Letter of Invitation sometimes called a Voucher or Visa Support Letter in order to apply for your visa. You must apply for your Russian visa in advance. Visas are not available on arrival or en-route.  We do not recommend trying to obtain your Russian visa outside of your home country or place of residence as your application may be refused.

Visas Extensions: Please be aware that visa extensions are NOT possible in Russia.
Train Tickets: Train tickets in Russia are booked with passport numbers. Please make sure you provide us with your correct passport number. If you have to renew your passport after booking please notify us as soon as you have a new passport number and bring your old passport with you on your trip. If we receive changes to passport numbers less than 30 days prior to departure we cannot guarantee purchase of train tickets. We do not recommend travelling on multiple passports for trips that involve border crossings by train. This can cause difficulties with train ticket bookings and cause significant issues delays at Immigration.
Migration Cards:  All foreign citizens entering Russia are required to fill in a migration card. The entry portion of the card will be retained by Immigration upon arrival. The stamped exit portion of the card must be kept with your passport during your stay in Russia and submitted to Immigration upon departure. If you are not given a migration card at Immigration on arrival you must request one, even if the immigration official says that you do not need one. Loss or failure to receive the exit portion of the card will result in you not being able to travel on our trip as all hotels require this card for registration and may result in significant delays or fines upon departure.

Serbia - Visas

Border Crossings: Passports have to be carried however stamps are rarely issued at border crossings.

Siberia - Visas

Please apply for your visa in advance at your closest embassy or consulate. You will most likely be required to supply a completed visa application form, 2 passport photos, a copy of your itinerary, a copy of hotel bookings, your passport and payment. Dragoman will supply the hotel confirmation letter.

Sudan - Visas

Entry visas are required by almost all nationalities, and are valid usually for one month.  Evidence of a previous visit to Israel may result in a visa refusal. Expect to spend around US$100 for the visa and wait 2 weeks. Visas can take up to two months to obtain and often need an invitation.

The Balkans - Visas

The Congo - Visas

A Visa is required. For obtaining a visas you will need: A Yellow Fever Certificate, a bank letter confirming funds, a recent invoice confirming address, a character reference from employer/school and a Tour/hotel confirmation if applicable.

Ukraine - Visas
